In preaching class yesterday, the following comment was made about the relationship between thorough exegesis of the Biblical readings, and the resultant sermon:

Exegesis is a bit like underwear: your congregation will want to be reassured that you're wearing it, but won't necessarily want to see it.

It's certainly worth thinking about!
